THANK YOU! Many thanks to all who have been involved in the many activities of the past week, including our patronal festival, the parish lunch, and the various concerts that have taken place in church. Many people have commented on the warmth of the welcome offered by the people of St John’s!

FOOD BANK
Tim reports that the total amount from their last collection from St John’s was a very impressive 79.35kg.
He observes that the bin was overflowing and wants to pass on his thanks to all those who contributed.
The foodbank which is housed at the Foleshill Baptist Church has now provided food for just under 11,700 people since they started in November 2011, and our church has a prominent place among their many contributors.
Sheila and Mike visited their Foodbank cafe recently which is open on Monday and Friday lunchtimes and was impressed with their menu and set up - there is no fixed price for the two course meal, they only ask for a donation.
We are considering visiting the cafe as a group in a couple of weeks’ time, please see Mike or Sheila.

VISITOR MINISTRY

Mike reports that a superb footfall in June sees our half year total only 6% behind the same period last year - our record year. A big thank you to the volunteers who managed to keep the church open.

ARABIAN BITES

This new project based in the Methodist Central Hall on Warwick Lane offers ‘authentic Arabic food with a Vegan twist’. Newly arrived refugees from Syria and Iraq are being supported to learn new skills and share their culture. The food is low cost, really healthy and very tasty. It is open from 5pm Tuesday to Saturday. This project is being supported by local churches, and those running the project would love lots of people to go along to try the food and support those taking part. You can be sure to get a seat by booking on 02477 677178 or

We are, once again, collecting for the work of the Additional Curates Society, which seeks to encourage vocations to ordination and to support parishes in need of clergy. Please take a collecting box and a prayer card from the back of church.

Please see the letter which is available at the back of church regarding this matter, and do speak to me if you wish to discuss this.

WALSINGHAM PILGRIMAGE

If the start of the new year has got you thinking about the possibility of going on pilgrimage, remember that this year’s Coventry North Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham will be from Monday, 13th to Thursday, 16th August. Please speak to Fr Dexter to reserve a place. At this stage a £10 deposit is required.

On days when the church is open the Angelus is said at noon.

ALL SOULS’ DAY. All Souls’ Day, when we pray for all the faithful departed, is this Thursday. Requiem Masses will be celebrated at 1.00pm and 7.00pm that day.  HYMN BOOKS. As a parish, we are seeking ways to grow in our worshipping life. One of the ways in which we plan to do this is to vary the range of hymns that we sing on Sundays, and we are doing that today by re-introducing The New English Hymnal (the green book), though we will continue to use Hymns Old and New (the red book) on some Sundays. We hope that this will ensure that we are able to use the best of both traditional and modern hymnody.

CONFIRMATION. Bishop Jonathan will be with us on Wednesday 15 November to celebrate Mass and administer the sacrament of Confirmation. We hope that this will ensure that we are able to use the best of both traditional and modern hymnody.

WE WELCOME back Fr Darren Smith, as our celebrant and preacher today and thank him for his ministry to us throughout Holy Week and Easter.

A HUGE THANK YOU to all who helped prepare our church for the Holy Week and Easter services and to those who contributed in various ways to the worship.

MESSAGE FROM FR DEXTER BRACEY . Last week it ws announced that our new Rector is to be Fr Dexter Bracey, currently serving in Swindon New Town. Fr Dexter has sent this message - “I am very pleased to have been appointed as your new Rector, and am much looking forward to joining you in Coventry during the summer. There is, of course, a big job to do in sharing the good news of Our Lord and his saving death and resurrection which we will celebrate during this Holy Week, and an urgency about sharing it with younger generations. But I hope and pray that we, as priest and people together, can both celebrate and proclaim that good news in the parish of St John the Baptist. Amy and I are looking forward to our move, and getting to know you all. Please pray for us as we prepare for that move, as we pray for you as the parish prepares for this next chapter in its long and exciting history. With all good wishes for a blessed Holy Week and Easter, Fr Dexter.” A copy of this message with a photograph can be seen on the notice board.

Sunday April 23, 11.30am - 4pm.

St George's Day Open Day.

Up to the right of the East Window - St George - also a closer in view below

The Dragon is not quite so clear.

Come and see the unique 14th century sculptures either side of the great East Window of St George and his dragon at St John the Baptist Church, Fleet Street, Coventry.
It dates from the time in the late 14th century when the monks of the great churches in Coventry were beginning to suffer being in the pilgrim shade when compared to those visiting Canterbury, Lincoln and Lichfield.
Church warden Ann Tuesley takes up the story.
"So they came up with a great piece of spin, that St George, whose reputation of being England's patron saint was flourishing due to his winning appearances via banners and shields on French battlefields, was born in Coventry!
Caludon Castle in fact!
A load of hokum, but chapels and statues were soon blossoming in the city!
Very few have survived, but those two in St Johns survived and in a very competant state.
These can be see next Sunday as well the many other grotesques that are such a vibrant visual part of this beautiful church.
Throughout the day sample the superb acoustics of this medieval gem with organ music and recorder recitals.
Meet Queen Isabella, the founder of the church, and be amazed by the stories of St Johns origins.
There will be exhibitions, guided tours, and refreshments all day.

Since that time the choir has performed in a wide variety of venues in Pembrokeshire and beyond, including St. David’s Cathedral, Pembroke Castle, Brecon Cathedral, St David’s Hall, Wales Millennium Centre, and Truro Cathedral, raising funds for local and national charities such as the RNLI, Prostate  Cymru, Pembrokeshire Carer’s Outreach, Shalom House, Pembrokeshire Counselling Service, Christian Aid, Tŷ Hafan, Tenovus. Cruise and the Paul Sartori Foundation.

Musical Director Dr Nancy Mann

Nancy Mann was appointed musical director of the choir in January, 1999. A native of Knoxville,Tennessee, her career in the United States included the production of musicals and operas as well as teaching and performing. In addition to Bachelor and Master’s degrees in music, she holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in opera production from the University of Texas at Austin. Nancy moved to Pembrokeshire from Southport, Merseyside, where she was active as a private piano and singing teacher as well as serving as the associate conductor of the Crosby Capriol Singers. Nancy also plays viola with the Teifi Chamber Orchestra.

Pianist Gerald Nicholas

Gerald resides in Haverfordwest and has been accompanying the choir since 1998.

The choir has sung outside of Wales on several occasions, performing in Bruges, The Netherlands, England, Scotland, and Ireland. In May 2009 they travelled to Oberkirch, Germany, to celebrate twenty years of Oberkirch’s twinning with Haverfordwest, returning in October 2014 for the 25th Anniversary celebrations.

The choir has been invited on several occasions to sing for various Civic Services, including a service for the Annual Meeting of The National Association of City and Town Sheriffs of England and Wales held at St. Mary’s Church, Haverfordwest in 2007.

New members of all ages are welcome at any time. The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7.30-9.30 pm in The Albany Chapel Hall, Hill Street Haverfordwest. St George's Day - 23rd April

A chance to see the unique 14th century sculptures either side of the great East Window of St George and his dragon at St John the Baptist Church, Fleet Street, Coventry.
This 670 year old city centre church is the parish church for Spon End and the lower part of Earlsdon.
The unique sculptures date from the time in the late 14th century when the great churches in Coventry losing pace with the Cathedral cities of York and Lincoln and Lichfield.
Visitor Liaison Officer Mike Polanyk believes it was an inspired piece of early marketing.
"The church authorities came up with a great piece of medieval spin, putting out a story that St George, whose reputation of being England's patron saint was flourishing due to his winning appearances via banners and shields on French battlefields, was born in Coventry!
Caludon Castle in fact!"
Mike admits it was a load of hokum, but chapels and statues were soon blossoming in the city!
Very few have survived, but those two in St Johns are in a very competant state.
These can be seen on St Georges Day as well the many other grotesques that are such a vibrant visual part of this beautiful church.
Throughout the day sample the superb acoustics of this medieval gem with music recitals; meet Queen Isabella, the founder of the church, and be amazed by the stories of St Johns origins.
There will be exhibitions, guided tours, and refreshments in the hall most of the day.

Our Rector Fr Dexter Bracey has devised the programme:

" As a longstanding place of Christian worship, St John the Baptist is a building which speaks of peace and tranquility, and members of the congregation seek to work with other Christians and others in the community to foster a culture of reconciliation."

"The programme of activities planned for this festival offers opportunities to experience the peace and tranquility of the building and, in different ways, to reflect upon past conflicts, remember those who have suffered as a result of them, and to pray for peace."

Coventry based charity Unlock the Music Concert Making (UMCM) will once again offer an all day festival of music and entertainment within the church’s historic walls. There is a free concert given by musical and other learners associated with UMCM in the afternoon, followed by an evening event featuring some of the very best students of classical music, jazz and musicals in Coventry.

Last year’s spectacular concert was filled to capacity, and received the support of Councillor Lindsley Harvard, Lord Mayor of Coventry, and Pru Porretta as Lady Godiva.

This event is presented in association with The Rotary Club of Coventry, and is in aid of the restoration of the church’s beautiful and very rare 1878 Bechstein piano, and the creation of a library in Lokiliri in South Sudan.

Sunday April 23, 11.30am - 4pm.

St George's Day Open Day.

Up to the right of the East Window - St George - also a closer view below

The Dragon to the left of the East Window is not quite so clear.

WELCOME BACK CAM

"To all who wondered why my #BlackDogCampaign #Camino posts stopped - the friend I went with and I ended up parting ways and he had the phone, so I have been incommunicado throughout. I will try to do something retrospectively - as I arrived in Santiago on Wednesday at 11.15 am a day and a half early an got back to Coventry Saturday afternoon (1 October). Still can't believe I did it!"

Ian, another member of our congregation is also on the 'Camino' but had to rest up for some days to recover from blisters, but is now back walking again. Last information is that he was near Saria, with 100 kilometres to go.
